Mallorcan composer Rubén Gallardo stated in an interview with Revista Plural that music in film must go beyond simple accompaniment and become an element that emotionally connects with the viewer. According to him, an effective soundtrack is one that breathes with the film, supporting the narrative without overshadowing it, and acting “like another actor” within the story.

Gallardo explained his working method, which always begins with reading the script to understand the emotions the story seeks to convey. After the first cut, he meets with the director to create a “musical script,” a document that defines where the music should appear and what role it should play in each moment. For him, this collaboration is essential to achieving a cohesive and meaningful result.
He also spoke about the recording process, describing it as one of the most moving stages of his profession: hearing his music come to life through an orchestra or specialized musicians. Gallardo mentioned influences such as Ennio Morricone and Hans Zimmer, whose work has shaped his own understanding of storytelling through music.
Gallardo used the interview to reflect on the current landscape in Spain, where he believes film music still lacks the recognition it deserves. Even so, he acknowledges that the industry is evolving and that more directors are beginning to value the importance of a well-crafted soundtrack.
